A sentence is a group of word that makes complete sense and tells a complete thought. A sentence always tells “who” or “what” and “what is” or “what happens”.
Example:
Friend tammy my friend is. – makes no sense, therefore it is not a sentence.
Tammy is my friend. – makes complete sense, therefore it is a sentence.
There are four kinds of sentences by purpose. Each kind of sentence ends with its own special punctuation mark.
1. Declarative (or assertive sentence): It is a sentence that makes a statement. This type of sentences is simple sentences. A declarative sentence states, assert or declare something. It is punctuated by a period (.).
Examples:
The dog is barking.
It is a bright day.
She likes chocolates.
2. Interrogative sentence: An interrogative sentence is used to ask question. This type of sentence ends in a question mark (?).
Examples:
Is it hot?
Where do you stay?
Do you like chocolates?
3. Imperative Sentence: It is a sentence that gives a command, makes a request or expresses a wish. It ends with a period (.).
Examples:
Leave the room. (an order)
Please be quite. (a request)
Have a nice day. (a wish)
4. Exclamatory Sentence: It is a sentence that expresses sudden and strong feelings like happiness, gratitude, sympathy, surprise, or pity. It is punctuated by a an exclamation mark (!).
Examples:
What a beautiful day!
Lovely flowers!
That hurts!
