Scientific notation is a way of writing numbers that are too large or too small to be conveniently written in standard notation. In scientific notation the number is written as:

R × 10b

where, the coefficient R is a real number called significand and exponent b is an integer. The exponent shows the number of decimals needs to be moved change the number to standard notation. If the number is 10 or greater, the decimal point has to move to the left, and the power of 10 will be positive. If the number is smaller than 1, the decimal point has to move to the right, so the power of 10 will be negative.

Examples:

234,000,000 = 234 × 106

4521 = 4.521 × 103

781 × 103 = 781,000

0.034 = 3.4 × 10-3

6.7 × 10-4 = 0.00067
