A formula is a mathematical statement which represents the relation between the values of the variables. A formula is used to find the value of any variable which is included in it. For doing this, all the values of the variables must be known which are included in the formula except the variable which needs to be found.

Framing a formula:

A formula can be framed using the given information which represents the relation between all the variables. The process of framing a formula is explained using the following examples.

Example 1:

Frame the formula for the volume of a cuboid whose volume is the product of its length, width and height.

Solution:

Let the measurements of the cuboid be as follows.

Length = l

Width = w

Height = h

Volume of the cube = length * width * height = l * w * h.

Example 2:

If there is a discount of x% on an article whose marked price is C then frame the formula for the selling price of the article S.

Solution:

Since there is a discount of x% on the marked price C,

Discount = C *x/100

To get the selling price, discount needs to be subtracted from the marked price.

So, selling price = C – C *x/100

Example 3:

The costs of banana, mango and sweet lime at a fruit selling shop are $1, $2 and $2.5 respectively. If a person buys ‘b’ bananas, ‘m’ mangoes and ‘s’ sweet limes then frame the formula for the total cost.

Solution:

Total cost of ‘b’ bananas = 1b =b (Since the cost of each banana is $1).

Total cost of ‘m’ mangoes = 2m (Since the cost of each mango is $2).

Total cost of ‘s’ sweet limes = 2.5s  (Since the cost of each sweet lime is $2.5).

So, the total cost = b + 2m + 2.5s.
