The verb is the most important part of a sentence. A verb is defined as a word which shows action or state of being.

In the sentence, David ate a burger, ate is the verb and shows the action of the sentence.

In the sentence, She is a beautiful girl, there is not action but a state of being is expressed by the verb is.

Verbs change their form.  The different forms of verbs show different meaning related to tense, number, person and voice. Sometimes endings are added (walk-walked) to the verb and sometimes the verb becomes different (break-broke).

Table below shows the example of verbs in each tense:

Verbs that form the past tense by adding –d or –ed are called regular verbs (add, walk). Some verbs have different forms. Such verbs are called irregular verbs (see, speak).

The table below shows some examples of verbs for number (singular, plural) and person (first, second, third person).
