Data can be represented in a number of ways. In statistics, stem-and-leaf plot is a device to represent data in graphical form similar to histogram. The data in the stem-and-leaf plot are arranged by place value. The digits in the largest place form the stem and the digits in the smallest place form the leaf (leaves). The leaves are displayed to the right of the stem. Stem-and-leaf plots are very useful where there is large number of data to analyze.

Let us study the below stem-and-leaf-plot.

The digits under stem column are at tens place and the digits under leaf column are at ones place of the numbers forming the list. The plot above shows the numbers 51, 55, 58, 60, 63, 76, 78, 79, 83.

In order to create a stem-and-leaf plot of given set of data it is better to arrange them in order.

Example:

45, 89, 23, 21, 22, 25, 37, 39, 40, 42, 55, 57, 59, 63, 83, 71, 72, 69

Arranging from smallest to largest:

21, 22, 23, 25, 37, 39, 40, 42, 45, 55, 57, 59, 63, 69, 71, 72, 83, 89

Now the digits are tens place make the stem and the digits are tens place make the leave of the plot.

To represent or compare two sets of data, ‘back to back’ stem-and-leaf plot is used which has common column for stem and two columns for leaf on each side of the stem.

Two lists of numbers represented by the above plot are

2, 2, 31, 35, 43, 46, 72, 75, 78

3, 4, 9, 35, 38, 44, 46, 71
