Nutrition is very important for nourishment of the body and protection against aliments. The supply of food that organisms eat is  important for the cells in the body to survive.  In science and human medicine, nutrition is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods. In hospitals, nutrition may refer to the food requirements of patients, including nutritional solutions and supplements.

Nutrition involves identifying how certain diseases, conditions or problems may be caused by dietary factors, malnutrition, food allergies and metabolic diseases. This also includes how diseases, conditions and problems can be prevented or lessened with a healthy diet.

Nutrients are those elements present in food which provide the body with energy and enable it to grow, repair and maintain itself. It is thus necessary to understand the exact role of nutrients in our food and recognize the various foods that provide these nutrients.

Food nutrients can be classified according to their function:

Energy rich foods

These foods break down to release energy. Part of the energy is used for mechanical and muscular work, and another part is used to synthesize complex compounds or is stores in high energy compounds.Example: fats and carbohydrates ( wheat, potato, oil sugar).

Body Building foods

The nutrients synthesize compounds which help to make the cellular elements, intra cellular structures, bones, cartilages and skin. In other words these build mass and repair tissues.Example : Proteins like milk, meat, egg white, pulses, gram, peas etc).

Protective foods

These foods provide nutrients which are vital for body functions. Their absence results in deficiency diseases such as scurvy, beri-beri, and rickets. The health concerns of these deficiencies will also have a negative impact on other aspects of life, such as overall energy, healing and recovery from illness or injury and mental clarity.

Examples:

Vitamins, such as Vitamin C, B12, and D. Trace minerals such as irons, magnesium, or calcium.

Nutrition in a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is a diet which includes all nutrients in the required proportion along with water and roughage. A balanced diet ensures a normal mental and physical status, an increased work capacity, and the ability to resist diseases. For most people it is can be difficult to maintain a perfect diet without radically altering aspects of their lives. Supplements have become a popular source of missing, or difficult to find nutrients in one’s diet.
