Usually the angle in a circle is 360 degrees. Though an angle is usually measured in terms of degrees, the fractional parts of the degrees are measured in terms of minutes and seconds and their representations are as follows.

1 degree = 10

1 minute = 1’

1 second = 1’’.

And

1 0= 60 minutes => 1 ‘= 1/60 0

1 ‘= 60 ‘’=> 1 ‘’= 1/60 ‘

So, together 1 ‘’= 1/60 * 1/60 degrees = 1/3600’’.

Here are some examples which will illustrate the process of converting degrees into minutes, minutes into degrees, seconds into degrees etc.

Example-1:

Convert 45.3 0 into degrees and minutes.

Solution:

45.3 0= 45 + 0.3 0

We have 1 ‘= 60 ‘’

So, 45.3 0= 45 + 0.3 0 = 45 0+ (0.3 * 60) ‘ = 45 0+ 18 ‘ = 45 018’.

Example-2:

Convert the angle 25012’ into degrees.

Solution:

25012’ = 250+12’

We have 1 ‘= 1/60 0

So, 25012’ = 250+12’ = 250+(12/60) 0=250+0.20=25.20

Example-3:

Convert 42015’45’’ into degrees.

Solution:

We have

1 ‘= 1/60 0

1 ‘’= 1/3600 ‘’

So, 42015’45’’=420+ (15/60)0+(45/3600)0

=420+0.250+0.01250=42.26250
