Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edmonton District Curriculum
The curriculum that is used in Edmonton was developed by Alberta Education to cover all programs of study and provide standards of learning within the subjects. There are curriculum developed for the core academic subjects, the Languages, Health, Career and Life Management, Information Technology, Environmental Education, Physical and Wellness Education and other fields of study. Alberta Education updates these curriculum standards on a yearly basis to ensure that all students are receiving a high quality, current education.
The goal is to provide instruction that develops abilities so that the skills and knowledge that students gain in their subjects ultimately allows them to master the subject and be prepared for future academic and career pursuits. For instance, in science, students learn about various types of earth materials, including soils and rocks, and devise a system of organizing and classifying them appropriately. Engineering is also a pivotal part of the science curriculum. Students describe why some materials are better than others for certain applications.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Lessons on Social Media
The news media is rife with examples of the consequences regarding social media behavior. This is definitely a topic that receives exposure at school, and students benefit by thinking through the consequences of social media use. The future implications of their actions is a regular topic of conversation. College admissions programs and employers may not hire them based on their profiles. Some teachers have students act like employers searching a potential candidate’s Twitter or Facebook account. Would they hire this person? If you need more ideas, Common Sense Media offers support for teaching these valuable lessons. What happens outside the classroom (and with social media, inside too), can affect students’ learning and quality of life, and it is a critical lesson to learn how to develop best practices in using social media.
