Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edmonton District Curriculum
The curriculum that is used in Edmonton was developed by Alberta Education to cover all programs of study and provide standards of learning within the subjects. There are curriculum developed for the core academic subjects, the Languages, Health, Career and Life Management, Information Technology, Environmental Education, Physical and Wellness Education and other fields of study. Alberta Education updates these curriculum standards on a yearly basis to ensure that all students are receiving a high quality, current education.
The goal is to provide instruction that develops abilities so that the skills and knowledge that students gain in their subjects ultimately allows them to master the subject and be prepared for future academic and career pursuits. For instance, in science, students learn about various types of earth materials, including soils and rocks, and devise a system of organizing and classifying them appropriately. Engineering is also a pivotal part of the science curriculum. Students describe why some materials are better than others for certain applications.

Edmonton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Students in Edmonton are taught following the curriculum designed by Alberta Education. The curriculum is a framework for teaching and learning in all subject areas across the grade span. It describes the learning objectives and measurable goals that students need to achieve in order to become proficient in the subject. In English, the goals of developing critical reading, writing and communication skills is built through reading across genres, writing for different purposes, and analyzing the different elements of text. In Math, students learn multiple problem solving strategies with the goal that they become able to determine the best way to solve a problem and to do so efficiently.

- Music Enrichment - Students in Edmonton are offered opportunities to explore their musical side through out of school experiences in chorale singing, string. band, handbell and guitar ensembles. Opportunities in studio art as well as the performing arts are also available.
- Living Library - One local school, Jasper Place, is hosting an innovative program called The Living Library. This program runs for an entire school day and consists of one person with interesting life experiences to serve as a book by sharing their stories and experiences with the audience. This program was first piloted in Denmark as a way to confront prejudices.
- Communication Action - The 9th grade Leadership Class at Riverbend School is demonstrating what it takes to promote change locally. The students in the class are hosting a silent auction to raise money to support efforts at reducing poverty. The students have involved many people in their effort to create a successful fund-raiser.
