In this fast paced world, everyone is running around attempting to accomplish multiple tasks at once. Students especially feel the need to maintain a constant balance between classes, studying, assignments and extracurricular activities. As a result, students tend to get less and less sleep. School is so competitive (especially postsecondary schools) that a student who attends class in the morning must study at night. Often when he/she arrives to class they cannot focus. When asked certain questions such as did you finish your assignment, did you have enough sleep, or let’s do something tonight, a common reply we hear from such a student is “No, I do not have time.” Often, I wonder how true is this? Is this really the case?
Great people have given much thought to time; some might say time is money while others might say time is life. In any case time is very important and it’s in our hands to make a good use of it. Every student who makes it to university has a high academic background. But then why do some students manage to excel in this environment while others fail? The key skill that these successful students have developed is time management skills.
Managing your time wisely can really benefit you in your academic, professional or personal life. Many freshmen do not exercise proper time management. This renders university a burden, rather than a fun learning experience. Here are few tips on time management:
Make a list: Plan your day and prioritize your tasks. Also set deadlines for your to do list. Make sure you make an attainable list. It is important to set deadlines for all your tasks. You must finish your task in the given time frame.
Stop multitasking: Contrary to common belief, multitasking is not efficient. It can slow you down and you are more likely to make mistakes. Therefore do one thing at a time.
Try your best: Make sure we stay true to ourselves and put in an honest effort.
Use your downtime: How much time do you spend waiting for a bus or a professor? Contrarily, How much time do you spend making your “To Do List”? Use your downtime to make your list. Always make the best out of your down time.
Reward yourself: Once you have achieved your goal, do not forget to reward yourself.
Managing your time wisely can take you very far. While complaining, “I don’t have enough time,” first ask yourself if you have used your time wisely. Do not forget that everyone has the same amount of time as you do. Hence we must remember the great inspiring quote from Jackson Brown, “Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.’
