A fraction is representation of a part of a whole. It is written as

where a is numerator which tells the number of equal parts and b is denominator which tell how many parts the whole is divided into.

Sometimes we need to compare two fractions. The two fractions may or may not have same denominator. If the denominators of the two fractions are same then the fraction with the greater numerator is the greater fraction. For example, 3/4 is greater than 2/4. This can also be understood with the help of the figures below.

The two circles have been divided into 4 equal parts. The first circle is shaded to represent 3/4 . Two parts of second circle have been shaded to represent 2/4. It is clear from the diagram that more parts of circle one have been shaded indicating 3/4 is greater than 2/4.

If two apple pies are divided into 6 equal pieces each and you eat 2 pieces from one pie and your friend eats 5 pieces from the other pie. Then, obviously your friend ate more pieces because 5/6 is greater than 2/6.
