The question mark also known as interrogation mark is used at the end of interrogative sentences. It is used only with direct questions not with indirect questions. Below are the rules to use this punctuation mark.

–  At the end of the direct question.

Example:

Where are you going?

What is your name?

How are you doing?

 

–   After tag question

Example:

You like this, don’t you?

He is a nice person, isn’t he?

 

–  Not used after indirect or reported question

Example:

The teacher asked him why he did not come to the school the day before.

Harry asked her mother if he could come with her.

 

–  Not used with polite requests and instructions

Example:

Would you please tell me the way to exit.

Could you please send me an invite.
