Plants are one of the big groups of living things. Like other living beings plants grow and die, need energy, air, water and nutrients, made of cells, reproduce, breathe and react. They have complex cells and make their own food. Plants play important role in various biological cycles. A plant is consists of 6 main parts. Each part has a very important function explained below.
Root
These help to anchor the plant in the soil so it does not fall. They absorb water and mineral from the soil. Some extra food for future use is also stored in the roots.
Stem
Stem supports the upper parts of the plants. Stem conducts water and nutrients from roots. Food in the form of glucose travels from stem to the roots. Stem also stores food. A young stem (1 year old or less) with leaves is called shoot. Twig is also a young stem (1 year old or less) with no leaves that is in the dormant winter stage. A branch is a more than 1 year old stem typically with lateral stems radiating from it. A trunk is a woody plant’s main stem.
Nodes
Buds (undeveloped shoot from which leaves or flower parts grow) are located at nodes. Here, small buds develop into leaves, stems or flowers. The area between the two nodes is called an internode.
Leaf
Plant’s food is made in leaves by the process of photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight. During photosynthesis plant converts carbon dioxide and water to food.
Flower
These are the reproductive parts of the plants. Flowers contain pollen and eggs called ovules. After fertilization of the ovule, the ovule develops into a fruit.
Fruit
It provides covering to seed. Fruit can be fresh like and orange or hard like a nut. In some fruits like apple, orange and peaches the seeds are enclosed within the ovary. In some fruits like corn and strawberries sees are located on the outside of fruit tissue.
Seed
Seeds form in the fruit. A new plant grows out of a seed. It contains all the genetic information needed to develop into a plant.
