The word quadrilateral has come from two Latin words namely quadri (means a four) and latus (means a side). Together a quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides. i.e. it’s a closed figure with 4 sides. A quadrilateral has 4 interior angles which add upto 360 degrees. There are different quadrilaterals which are classified into categories basing on their sides and angles which are listed below.
a) Rectangle:
In a rectangle, all four angles are right angles and the opposite sides are equal in length.
b) Square:
In a square all four angles are right angles and all the sides are equal in length.
c) Rhombus:
In a rhombus also all the sides are equal in length and the opposite sides are parallel. But the angles are not right angles. The opposite angles are equal. In a rhombus, the diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
d) Parallelogram:
In a parallelogram, opposite sides and opposite angles are same.
e) Kite:
A kite has two pairs of adjacent sides. Here, the adjacent sides are equal in length. In a kite, the diagonals intersect at right angles. Also, the short diagonal is bisected by the longer one.
f) Trapezium:
In a trapezium, one paid of opposite sides are parallel. A trapezium is called an isosceles trapezium if the sides that are not parallel are equal in length.
