Pronouns are words that replace nouns in sentences. In order to use pronouns, we must have a noun for it to replace. This noun is called the antecedent of the pronoun and must be placed earlier in the passage than the pronoun. There are several types of pronouns, and we categorize them by the parts of a sentence they replace.

Subjective pronouns:

This type of pronoun replaces the subjective of the sentence.

Sally took the train to work. — _____ took the train to work.

I took the train to work.

You took the train to work.

He took the train to work.

She took the train to work.

We took the train to work.

They took the train to work.

Objective pronouns:

This type of pronouns replaces the objective of the sentence.

Tom walked his brother back home. — Tom walked _____back home.

Tom walked me back home.

Tom walked you back home.

Tom walked him back home.

Tom walked her back home.

Tom walked us back home.

Tom walked them back home.

Possessive pronouns:

This type of pronouns replaces nouns with a possessive adjective.

The teacher read my essay out loud in class. — The teacher read _____out loud in class.

The teacher read mine out loud in class.

The teacher read yours out loud in class.

The teacher read his out loud in class.

The teacher read hers out loud in class.

The teacher read ours out loud in class.

The teacher read theirs out loud in class.

Demonstrative pronoun:

This type of pronoun points to and identifies a noun or a pronoun

Reading the news took a long time. — _____took a long time.

This took a long time.

That took a long time.

These took a long time.

Those took a long time.

Interrogative pronoun:

This type of pronoun replaces a noun used to ask questions

Who took the last cookie?

To whom did you throw the ball?

What did she tell you?

Which of you lost their keys?
