Math Review of Problem-Solving Strategies: Writing Equations 150 150 Deborah

Overview:

The next step in solving a verbal problem is to write an equation that takes into account the relevant information in the problem.  After reading the problem carefully, summarize the numerical information in the form of a chart or table.  Then choose variables for the unspecified information.

Will Another Reading Help?

It is often useful for students to read the verbal problem again after summarizing all the numerical information.  This allows for time to consider how the numbers and variables relate to one another. Sometimes important information can be missed during the first time the problem is read.  It is often a good idea to check and make sure that everything is in order.

Is the Problem Similar to Another?

Sometimes verbal problems are in a series with other numerical problems in a math assignment.  For example, suppose  the review has equations like t +5 =8, y +16 =7, and 16-z = 24.  Then a verbal problem in the same assignment states that the sum of a number and 13 is 29.   In order to solve the problem, the equation would have a similar form, n + 13 = 29.

What Is the Relationship Between Numbers and Variables?

The relationship between numbers and variables will help determine the equation.  The unknown information in the above example, n + 13 = 29, is added to the known quantity, 13.  Although most problems are not that simple, the relationships will follow a logical pattern.  Usually writing the possible relationships down, drawing a diagram, or making a chart will help uncover clues.

What Type of Problem Needs to Be Solved?

After the relationships between numbers and variables are identified, possible equations can be determined.  In some problems, the total will be part of the numerical information, but in others, the total will be the variable.  The operations that need to be performed — whether addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division — will be defined in the verbal problem itself.  As problems become more complex, more than one operation will need to be performed.
