I would give them advice on things to consider during their high school years that will prepare them for transitioning to college. College is often the goal for many high school students but I do not believe enough attention is given to some of the areas you need to start exploring well in advance of high school graduation. Many students feel lost and confused as their high school years come to an end. They are trying to figure out what’s next and asking themselves where do I go from here?
Pursue opportunities in high school that will give a variety of experiences that will help you focus on your likes and dislikes when thinking about a college major or a career (internships, volunteer opportunities, job shadowing ). While you are attending high school build up a network of people around you (friends, family, and neighbor) who you can turn to for advice or ideas. You never know who has experience or knowledge of something unless you are willing to be receptive to dialogue someone may be able to give you advice about community college vs. private schools, student loans vs. working part-time, etc. don’t think you have all the answers. Starts exploring a host of financial options (scholarships, grants, donations) don’t rely heavily on loans to cover the cost of tuition and other related expenses. Determine your level of commitment to attending college. It is a big decision that will require dedication and perseverance and a lot of long nights studying and early morning classes. However, once you have decided that pursuing a college education is right for you (because although it is not the only pathway to success it is one of the best ways to afford yourself more job opportunities and greater economic stability. Allow yourself some flexibility and think about all the ways you can explore all that college has to offer once you arrive (Study abroad, work study. resident assisting, teaching assisting, etc.).
Ultimately in high school you should set goals. Make plans. Build on experiences and understand that once you graduate high school it is not the end. It is only the beginning.
