Going into high school, the age demographic resembled maturity, sophistication, adulthood. This was the start of independence for most students, many of which are preparing for their lives after high school. This first taste of true self-reliance is a huge factor in the way a person may carry themselves. My ideal vision of high school consisted primarily of finding my own path, solving encountered problems solitarily, and success that was unheard of.
Starting my classes I noticed a sharp incline of difficulty from previous schooling. What was an hour of homework and studying turned into four to five hours within a few days. After completing the work requirement of my most extraneous classes, I neglected classes I have previously done well in.After putting in minimal effort and still retaining desirable grades in more simple classes, I pushed them aside. Not having to study was normal within some subject areas, but this material seemed foreign the deeper into the quarter we got.
It was before a major test when I realized I did not retain any of the information I needed. Scrambling to find notes, classwork, and anything that would help me study proved that I neglected to provide an ample amount of attention to what was supposed to be an easy class. This feeling showed me that doing work and understanding content are two completely different things.
Going in for extra help was my only option at this point. I was too clueless towards the informational value of the material, I did not know how concepts related, and how they can be applied. Although I strived for total independence, there was no other way I could do well on the test. After discussions with my teacher, they were able to show me resources that would assist in comprehension and application. I watched instructional videos online, did practice worksheets, and that helped me to understand my notes and previous work.
When it was time for the test, I was prepared despite my previous negligence thanks to the remastery I did the week before. From that point on I made sure not to count out any classes and became more balanced in my schoolwork. I also was not afraid to ask for help anymore and realized that it is okay to get help along your journey.
