Half of the things we learn in school are applied to the real world to help us become successful in life. The other half are from personal experiences. I participate at my local Boys and Girls club, A. Worley Brown Boys and Girls club of Metro Atlanta. I’m currently in my ninth and final year of being a part of their amazing club. Over the nine years I have involved, I’ve learned so much to help accomplish my goals. They had a club called Gavel Club that focused on how, young teenagers, can improve their speech. There were many workshops to improve on this particular skill. One of the many workshops included everyone would prepare a speech and each time the individual said “um”,” like”, or used an improper way of “and” they would obtain a tally mark. At the end of the exercise we gave the person good criticism and told them what we liked about their speech and what could be improved. This helped me pay attention and recognize how I speak with my friends and others. I was also able to tune into the use of fragments or improper speech. Being in this particular club, I’ve improved because it gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and improve my speech and correct my grammar. We had a gathering at the end and everyone gave a speech. The person who spoke their speech the best, won a prize. I have worked really hard on speaking correctly after being involved in this club and overcame of fear with public speaking.
