I work in retail and have to be able to grow my communication skills with not only my team members but also the customers. Throughout my time working for Kohl’s I have found myself being more confident when I approach others and when being approached. I always find myself ready to answer questions with a smile because I am more than happy to help. With these communication skills that I have learned, I find it easy to hold a conversation with strangers and grant them satisfaction at our store. Having a communication skill set is important and can be used at various times. Communication has helped me greatly in different everyday activities and organizations such as science club.
I am in an organization that competes with science experiments. I take two to four months of paperwork preparation, a month of testing, and a month of getting my poster together, then I compete. In the competition, judges go around to different projects and listen to their presentations and at the end, the best receive awards. The judges were total strangers, most likely professors from universities and colleges that specialized in my category. When they approached me I had no fear. I felt as if I were talking to a friend. When I finished my conversation with the judges they gave me my score ticket. I had received a perfect score and later received several awards. I was in the top five out of my region which meant later that May I would go to the International Science Fair in Los Angeles as an observer. I felt that without my communication skills that I had learned from Kohl’s I would not have done as well as I did at the science fair. Therefore, communication helped me accomplish my goal to go to the International Science Fair.
