Certainly, opposed to other students across the country, I have not been provided with the opportunity to further my post-secondary education at an institution for free of cost due to my ACT composite score not meeting the desired score for a full-ride scholarship. Growing up to become the first child of seven to graduate high school and to attend college is a huge accomplishment, but I know that if I do not have enough funds in particular, $15,000 per semester for four years to continue to attend Tuskegee University, then my dream of pursuing my post-secondary education may come to an alternate halt. As I witness my father coming home past seven o’clock every night from work providing for 7 children and repeatedly doing the same thing everyday I think about my future and what lies ahead of me knowing that my college tuition will not be free! Surely, this is when the skill of time-management appeared unto me.
Assuredly, thinking about all the negative thoughts roaming amongst my mind of me not attending college, forced me to apply for scholarships. However, in order to apply for scholarships I had to learn the skill of time-management. There are several ways in which I get side tracked from completing certain tasks, such as: attending to my cellular device, viewing television, social media, etc. I had to remove myself from everything that was a distraction keeping me from not utilizing my time-management skills in which I learned in an organization, REACH Memphis. Which exposes students to life long experiences preparing them for a collegiate learning environment.
Moreover, by utilizing my time-management skills I have leaned that no matter where you come from you can achieve anything you set your mind to. It is not about what your ACT score is, it is about what you do going forward to make your dream of attending college become a reality. No matter what your friends or peers may say about you, continue to strive for excellence by utilizing your time-management skills properly. Along the way throughout high school I experienced many negative encounters by others’, voicing unto me that attending an Historically Black College or University was not a great choice. Moreover, I had enough confidence and self-esteem to voice that attending the college of my choice (HBCU), would be the best for me. In order for me to achieve the goal of attending an HBCU I had to utilize my time-management skills in applying for various scholarships to help me get into college.
In conclusion, learning and utilizing time-management skills helped me a lot throughout the process of me attending college. I had to instill in myself that no matter what others say, I can achieve the impossible. Utilizing time-management skills helped me accomplish things in which I never thought I would. Conquering over negative opinions voiced by others’ unto you, is a great feeling knowing that you achieve anything by utilizing a certain skill that you are accustomed to!
