A trapezoid also called a trapezium is a quadrilateral in which a pair of opposite sides is parallel. A trapezium becomes an isosceles trapezium if its sides which are not parallel are equal in length.

In a trapezium, the parallel sides are called the bases and the other two sides are called its legs. The perpendicular distance from one base to the other base is called the altitude of the trapezium.

The line segment joining the mid points of the legs of a trapezium is called its median.

Perimeter of a trapezoid:

The perimeter of a trapezoid is the sum of its two bases and two legs.

Area of a trapezoid:

When we combine two equal trapezoids by making one of its copy by 180 degrees and merging it to the other trapezoid, we get a parallelogram.

We know that the area of a parallelogram is base times its height. But here the base of the parallelogram would be the sum of the bases of the trapezoid a+b, where its height is h.

So the area of parallelogram = (a+b)h

Since the parallelogram is made of trapezoids of same area, the area of trapezoid would be half the area of the parallelogram.

So, the area of trapezoid = (a+b)h/2
