“Now ladies, sit up as if you are a puppet and someone is pulling on a string from the top of your head.” Instructions like this may sound odd to anyone else, but to us choir girls, it made perfect sense. Throughout high school, choir was the class that I looked forward to every day. Music has always been a passion of mine, and choir was the perfect outlet for me to let my voice be heard. Also, it was just really fun. I was in a women’s choir for three of my four years in high school, and we grew to be really close. We would give each other back massages, gossip together, and travel to competitions every spring. Some days we would go out into the grand foyer of our school during class and practice our songs there, which gave me goose bumps every time. I loved the camaraderie my classmates and I had; when we sang together, we were a force to be reckoned with.
Choir taught me a lot of things musically, like how to read music and how to harmonize. However, I think the most important thing I learned from choir was the importance of being part of a team. When my classmates and I sang together, we had to place priority on the group as a whole. If one person sang too loud or out of tune, the sound would not be cohesive. Every successful performance was a result of hours of practicing, listening, and adapting in order to get the best possible sound. This concept of teamwork has stuck with me after high school and even in my place of work. Whenever I am placed in a position in a group environment, I have learned to enjoy giving it my all in order to make my group the best it could be. I will continue to keep this team mindset when I move forward with my college journey this fall, and I will always hold those choir classes dear to my heart.
