The academic subject I learned the most from in high school was history. History is the meaningful subject because it encompasses all aspects of the human condition. From art to war, history is all around us and every part of our lives. The history of war and politics teaches us about the evolution of ideas and conflict resolution. Art history educates us on beauty ideals and attitudes throughout the centuries. The history of architecture tells us about the evolution of math and the sciences. Even the history of the subject of history and how we record it demonstrates certain cultural and aspects of every era. As many history professors will tell you, history is written by the winners. History has shaped my education by allowing me to gain a better perspective of the past and how I can affect the future. Part of the reason why I enjoy history is that you can view one period of time from so many different perspectives: political, social, cultural, etc. My dream is to be a lawyer, which is closely intertwined with history. The law profession is where the past meets the present, because we are upholding the laws and rights outlined by the forefathers of our country as well as working to create new laws that will shape the future of the United States. The outcome of many court cases have been some of the biggest historical events in American history. I feel that it is essential for students to study history because if we are not familiar with our past, we will not be able to make educated decision about our future. As the future of our country, students should be able to recognize the mistakes of the past so when they become leaders they can have a positive impact on our country and the world.
