I‘ve had many very good teachers throughout my thirteen years of education. Each teacher has taught me an enduring lesson. However, Mrs. Beckett stands out as the teacher that was most helpful to me as I worked to overcome an obstacle that could have been a significant issue as I looked forward to life after high school.

I took multiple PSAT exams in preparation for the real SAT exam that would decide my college fate. Unfortunately, I was doing poorly and needed help. My first score was just over 800 and Dad was very concerned that college may not be a reality for me. Mrs. Beckett, my former English teacher, selflessly offered to help. I met with her before school daily for two weeks leading up to the real SAT.

She helped me prepare for the big exam by assigning me practice exams in addition to teaching me test taking skills. Once completed, she would walk me through where I went right and where I went wrong in each section of the exam. We discussed why I missed certain questions and what adjustments I could make to improve my results on the real exam. I felt confident and ready for the big exam due to her help. I knew that I was well prepared.

I walked into the testing facility feeling confident. I walked out of the facility a few hours certain that I had achieved the score that I was seeking. When my score came in, I was thrilled! My 1170 scored exceeded my goal and was better than the results achieved by many of my friends, including some that maintained a higher GPA throughout high school.

However, I knew that I had done well due to Mrs. Beckett’s incredible help. I have had many wonderful teachers over the years, but Mrs. Beckett’s assistance was probably the most crucial to date. I was accepted to all six colleges that I submitted applications to attend. I was blessed with the flexibility to choose a college, rather than attend the only one that would offer admission. I may not have been so fortunate without the selfless spirit exhibited by Mrs. Beckett. I cannot thank Mrs. Beckett enough for helping me overcome the obstacle that I was experiencing at that time.
