When I was in elementary school I had a difficult time reading. I was so bad at reading there were times I would avoid it like the plague. After my teacher told my parents I was falling behind in school, it was time to act. I started out with tutoring from my teacher after school every other day. When I was still spending hours a night completing a chapter or two in the reading assignment for class the next day, I told my parents that I needed more help. I wanted to better myself in school and I didn’t want to be average. So we sought out Sylvan learning center. I had specialized one on one tutoring, two to three times a week. My tutor and I worked on reading comprehension, speed, grammar and reading aloud. It was hardest for me to read quickly but after about a month my reading had improved by leaps and bounds. I continue to benefit from the tutoring even now in high school. I remember I was scared to ask for help but after I did I felt better about it, I just wish I had done it sooner. This past school year I was able to finish a whole book series in only a few months, I had never before been able to do that. Being able to read faster has allowed me to move into more complicated classes and understand the content without confusion. Coming into my graduating year I am proud to say that I am a part of the National Honor Society. I have participated in the Marching band at Walled Lake Western for the past four years and I swam my first three years in high school while carrying a 3.59 GPA. Taking that first step and asking for help has allowed me to excel in ways I could never have imagined.
