A complex number is a number which can be put in the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is called the imaginary unit, where i2 = −1, a is called the real part and b the imaginary part of the complex number.
Representation of a complex number
A complex number can be graphically represented in a two-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system called the complex plane or Argand diagram, named after Jean-Robert Argand. The complex plane has horizontal axis to represent real numbers and vertical axis to represent imaginary part. The numbers are plotted using the real part as the horizontal component, and imaginary part as vertical component.
Point P(a, b) represents the complex number a + bi.
