Along with my educational and research qualifications, I also have a personal passion for teaching and science outreach. It has always been a long-term goal to teach or lecture in a professional capacity, and to help make science more accessible to today?s youth. This is why I believe in injecting my own enthusiasm for the sciences into my teaching, and to nurture in the student a genuine interest in the sciences. In addition to extensive practice, this will help students excel in their studies and achieve more in their scientific schooling.
My PhD, specializing in environmental aquatic geochemistry, was completed in November of 2013 at the University of Ottawa. Prior to my doctoral studies, I had completed my M.Sc. at the University of Victoria, where I specialized in gaseous biogeochemistry. My graduate and undergraduate schooling has developed a strong grounding in chemistry, geology, and mathematics, as well as for the writing of reports and papers for various scientific journals and federal agencies.
I was active as a teaching assistant throughout both my PhD and M.Sc. studies, during which I delivered pre-laboratory lectures, planned course curricula, created exercise materials, marked assignments and exams, and provided one-on-one assistance for individual students. My volunteer experience with the Let’s Talk Science program provided additional expertise with the presentation of science concepts to junior high and high school audiences, as well as the creation of activities and experiments for classroom use.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, visiting museums, and hiking. In general, I am an avid fan of the outdoors and try to spend as much time as I can outside, especially in natural areas.
