Stress is an inevitable problem as a student and can have negative impacts on both your mental and physical health. Luckily, there are ways that you can reduce the amount of stress in your life. Following these tips can help you reduce the impact of stress on your life.

Make a Plan

One of the biggest causes of stress is having too much to do and too little time to do it in. You can overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed by taking the time to plan out and write down a schedule for yourself. Decide when you are going to accomplish each task you have, prioritizing things that have a close deadline. By doing so, you will know how and when you are going to accomplish everything you need to, rather than not knowing whether or not it is possible. Keep in mind though, once you have a plan, you should try your best to stick to it.

Stop Procrastinating

A major source of difficulty with keeping to your plan of action is procrastination. Procrastination adds unnecessary stress to your day because when you avoid your tasks, it leaves you with far less time to accomplish them later on. You will be much better off if you do your work first, then you can relax later on knowing that you have accomplished things. If there is something you would rather be doing, tell yourself you can do it later, and use it as a reward to motivate you to finish.

Avoid Distractions

Try to avoid distractions that will take your focus off the task or that you could use to avoid your work. For example, don’t try to work in the same room as someone else watching TV or having a loud conversation, otherwise you might be tempted to start paying more attention to that rather than your work. Different environments work for different people, but often finding a quiet place like the library or an empty classroom is a good place since you are either away from people doing other things or surrounded by quiet people also working.

Healthy habits

It is important to keep healthy habits to help decrease stress, such as:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Exercising
  • Healthy eating
  • Talking to someone if you need it

You also don’t want to over-work yourself, so make sure to leave yourself some time to do activities you enjoy. Whether it be spending time with family or friends, listening to music, or watching your favorite new T.V show, do whatever will be relaxing and help you reduce your stress levels.
