The expectations placed on students can be overwhelming at times. From homework and extracurriculars to home obligations and personal issues, students have several social, mental and physical aspects of life that they need and are expected to balance. Juggling so many factors at the same time can seem daunting and result in a setback that seems unsolvable and permanent. Is there really no hope for recovery? I would like to direct your attention to the concept of resiliency. Resiliency is the ability to quickly recover from setbacks and difficulties. As a student, feeling the weight of a ton of expectations is inevitable. However, developing resilience skills can help any student rebound from the bad times back to good times.

Developing resilience skills is not something that happens automatically overnight. It requires sincere effort on the student’s behalf to truly become a resilient individual. In the rest of this article, you will learn about the methods to build resilience. The themes of the methods include past experiences, understanding oneself, and support systems.

Reflect on the past

Think about a time in life where you were going through very difficult circumstances. Now, rather than lingering on the negative emotions you felt at the time, think about the outcome of the situation. How did you deal with the situation? What support tools did you use to overcome the ordeal? How did you feel after being able to overcome the setback? Use these questions to analyze your previous experiences. Take note of the tools and procedures you used to battle the setback. Through your analysis, you can identify resources that may potentially aid you in overcoming your current setback.

Setting a positive mindset

Take a good look at the way you view your life experiences. Do you view setbacks as obstacles that are preventing you from moving forward in life? Or do you view them as challenges that can get you to utilize the skills you have developed throughout life and opportunities for growth in character? If you already think that setbacks are going to halt your progress in life, then that’s how it will turn out to be. Setbacks themselves do not prevent your progress, the way you perceive them is truly the determinant. Try to view setbacks with an optimistic approach and the door to opportunities to grow your skills and personality will open.

Utilize strengths

Strengths are areas that you are competent in. It is always good to know the areas in which you  excel to be able to use these to resolve a setback. It is always good to approach scenarios with skills that you are confident in to give you a sense of support and determination, rather than doubt.

Establish a support system

Find your circle of support to rely on during hard times. Sometimes, it is best to share information with reliable individuals as they can have useful tips and advice that they can draw upon from their past experiences. These individuals can be your family, friends or even a teacher. Everyone experiences a few setbacks in life, thus everyone has had some experiences from which they can learn valuable lessons. Combining your own skills and knowledge with the resources that your support system has to offer can create well-thought solutions to your setbacks.
