Resolve to Start the Day Right
What resolutions did you and your family make this year? Did you resolve to help your kids improve their performance in school? Eat healthier? Try new things?
What about eating breakfast?
The truth is breakfast is a crucial part of your day. By making sure your family eats before heading out the door, you’re not just checking off one resolution, you’re checking off three:
- Do better in school. Studies show time and time again that students perform better when they eat a healthy breakfast before school. Breakfast helps improve your child’s concentration and gives them more energy than kids who skip the morning meal.
- Get healthy. Sitting down together at the breakfast table sets a positive example for your kids. And since childhood obesity is such a concern these days, it’s important to seize every opportunity to teach your kids about nutrition. What’s more, studies have also shown that young people who eat breakfast have a lower risk of weight gain and obesity.
- Try new things. Because breakfast gives you more energy than you would have if you skipped it, your family may finally be up for trying a new activity together, like snowshoeing or entering a race!
Even if you don’t have time in the morning to sit down and have a full meal, you should still encourage your kids to eat something quick and easy, like fruit, a granola bar, oatmeal or cereal, nuts, or a whole grain bagel. Healthy carbohydrates are the key to a good breakfast.
So whether you’ve already broken a few resolutions or your resolve is still going strong, remember that making a positive impact is as easy as enjoying a delicious meal with your family. A well-balanced meal at the start of the day is a great step toward a healthier, happier family.
