Past tense is used to express actions started and finished in past. Simple past tense is type of past tense used:

  • To express action completed in past

Example: I went to museum yesterday.

  • To express duration in past

Example: I lived here for 5 years.

  • To express habits in the past

Example: She worked here last summer.

  • To express past facts or generalizations

Example: Last summer was very hot.

 

Rules

Second form of verb is used for simple past tense.

 

Positive form: Subject + second form of verb + object

Examples:

  1. I liked the sandwich.
  2. She reached home.
  3. They practiced piano today.

Negative form: Subject + did not + second form of verb + object

Examples:

  1. He did not like the sandwich.
  2. I did not go to work yesterday.
  3. Jack did not cook today.

Interrogative form: Did + subject + second form of verb + Object + ?

Examples:

  1. Did you finish your work?
  2. Did he eat his food?
  3. Did you call Gennie?
