The American Psychological Association’s trademarked, standardized method for presenting scientific writing – APA Style® – has been adopted by many universities as a comprehensive template for submissions from undergrads, researchers and academics in the Social Sciences.
The objective is to present scientific facts, theories and information in as organized, streamlined and undistracted way as possible, while minimizing apparent bias and providing partial citations within the body of the text.
The purpose of this page is a brief introduction to the form, the complete APA’s style rules can be found in The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, sixth edition, second printing.
APA Guidelines for Research Papers Sample
– Academic essays should be typed double-spaced with 1” margins and 12pt. font size.
– A “page header” or “running head” – not to exceed 50 characters, and representing the title or abbreviated title of the work – should be typed in all capitals, flush left, at the top of every page
– Page numbers are to be typed at the top, flush right.
– Every essay should have 4 major sections: Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and References.
– The Title Page should have the Title, Author’s Name, and Institutional Affiliation centered in the upper half of the title page. The recommendation is to keep titles less than 12 words and to use no abbreviations or meaningless words within the title.
– The Abstract is a description of 150-250 words of the key points and/or findings within your research paper. The paragraphs are not indented on the abstract page. At the end of the Abstract the writer may also Keywords. The Keywords is a separate line that italicizes and uses a colon as such: Keywords: First Keyword, Second Keyword, Third Keyword.
– The Paper will follow and the final component is the References Page. There are different formats for the references for different works. A book, a journal article, a television interview, and a blog post have different formats for the reference and the APA referencing instructions in the most current edition must be consulted.
