High School Career Planning 150 150 Teaching Staff

If you find yourself  wondering what to do after high school, here are few things to think about. First and foremost, you may be asked the popular question, “What program are you going into”. Well,  in order to decide, it is important that you take your time and consider both your current interests and your future aspirations.

Start by thinking about your favorite subject: Which subject do you enjoy in school? Which subject do you absolutely loathe? In order to answer these questions, make sure you  take variety of classes in high school to determine which courses/learning content you enjoy the most. Then, research possible programs available in the university regarding your favorite subject. You can play an elimination game which will, at the very least,  help you pick a general area to study in your future.

How to Choose Your University

Do you prefer studying at home or do you hope to  live on campus? Which colleges/ universities have your program of your choice? What are the graduation and employment rates of the university? A simple Google search will help you gather all of this data, and more.

However, it is a better idea to actually visit the university of your choice. Every university offers a fair or an open house which is a great way to get more information about the campus’  learning environment.  Last but not the least, in order to educate yourself a little further, try to  meet students in the program of your choice, and read online reviews. Getting personal accounts and past experiences will be extremely helpful when it comes to making such a BIG decision.

How to Choose Your Career

While picking your career, there are many things that you must keep in mind. Think about what you want to do:  you may want to help, organize, own a  business, advertise, teach, sell and/ or market.  This question can also be coupled with the question of:

  • What environment you would like to work in?
  • Do you like sitting in an office and doing work on a computer?
  • What about working outside or working in harsh conditions?
  • Do you work better alone or  in a group?

Taking part in different extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities would be beneficial as they will help you to recognize your likes and dislikes in order to answer the questions above. Here are few suggestions of things to do when you find yourself contemplating your future after high school.

  • Take variety of classes in high school
  • Participate in extracurricular activities
  • Volunteer
  • Talk to people in the university, program or profession you are interested in

Once you have done any or all of the above, combine the new found information and find your best match. This is an important time in your life, and although it may seem transitional and overwhelming, in this chaos you have the opportunity to find yourself. Make sure you spend some time discovering your likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, and overall  life goals. In order to determine your destination, you must know yourself and your potential!

Good luck finding the door to the new world!
