Amidst the stress of life’s constant demands, it can be easy to slip into a pessimistic mindset. Eventually however, this negative attitude becomes your habitual perspective. Constant gloom is not only detrimental to your mental health, but it can be a drain on those around you as well. While you may not be able to alter the circumstances of your life, you can certainly change your attitude. The power of positive thinking is truly transformational! By making a conscious effort to control the negativity, your entire world will begin to blossom.

Of course, this is much easier said than done. As the saying goes, old habits die hard. The behaviour needed to correct your perspective will take disciple initially. Soon however, like any annoying tendency, your gloomy mindset will be vanquished. If you are ready to lift your spirits, try incorporating the following strategies into your daily routine. They are specifically designed to help students create and maintain positivity.

 Count Your Blessings (Literally!)

When all you choose to see is the downside of your circumstances, it can be easy to forget the many remarkable graces of life. If you feel yourself becoming frustrated by persistent grievances, take a moment to pause. Breathe in deeply and begin to formulate a mental list of the good in your life. Think not only of the obvious, but also of the small occurrences you may normally overlook. Continue the exercise until the wave of negativity passes. If you repeat this thinking often, your brain will be trained to make positive connections which will ultimately boost your attitude.

Sleep & Exercise Regularly

You would be surprised by how many problems a good night’s sleep and regular exercise can solve. When you are well rested, the world appears to make more sense. In addition to clarity, you will gain the control necessary to contain any negative emotions that may arise throughout the day.  Exercise on the other hand, directly improves overall mood. This enhancement is a result of serotonin, one of the many hormones released by the brain during physical activity. Unfortunately most individuals are severely lacking in this regard. If you are constantly struggling to meet your daily quota of sleep and exercise, try creating specific times for these essentials in your schedule. By treating them like non-negotiable appointments, you are more likely to actually follow through. Once you begin experiencing the multiple benefits that sleep and regular exercise bring to your mentality, you won’t be sorry!

Practise Positive Self Talk

Self talk is the name given to your internal monologue. Whether you are aware of it or not, there is always a voice, your voice, speaking to you. The trick is learning to harness this constant stream of consciousness in an effort to bring encouragement and positivity into your life. Often when you are feeling disheartened, your self talk matches this attitude. By noticing this negative voice, you can consciously prevent it from continuing and work to replace it with different thoughts. You have the power to change the narrative of your life, and with it your entire perspective, so choose a happier one!
